Today, King Amusement Creative announced on YouTube a TV anime of Tokyo Babylon done by GoHands production to come in 2021. The trailer is embedded below in case you are the single TB fan who lived under an extraterrestrial rock during the previous week. The animation in the trailer looks beautiful and the character design appears to be close to what we saw in Clamp in Wonderland.

However, I admit having very mixed feelings.

On the one hand - I'm all over the moon, too, because who wouldn't LOVE getting a TB anime?!?

On the other hand, there are two things that keep me from being all exuberant now.

Firstly, CiWo's character design (and the one in the trailer linked above) doesn't click well with me. It's beautiful, clear-lined, fluent, and works well for the twins, but Seishiro... looks strange for me. I guess mostly because of the different glasses, but sheesh - that's your shallow writer for you; and you can be sure it won't keep me from watching!
The second thing is more serious, though. I've only been an active participant - creating fan works, participating in discussions, etc. - in four small fandoms (Galaxy Rangers, Emperor's Edge, Viewfinder, and TBX - if you are curious), and two of them died when new material was released after a long hiatus.
In one case, it was just the release of the source material as a DVD set, in the other, the book series was continued after what was a bitter-sweet but fitting conclusion and the fandoms just evaporated. People consumed the new material... and discussions died down, interactions dwindled, exchanges stopped... the mailing list of the DVD fandom trickled down to being mostly the "you have to renew your subscription"-mail once a year, and the book forum became a ghost town, not over night, but within weeks of the new volume.
The fandoms didn't survive the new material. At all. Viewfinder never had a real hiatus, just an awfully slow release cycle to begin with, and I wasn't that active in it to begin with, so it can't serve as a counterexample.
I can help but fear that something similar may happen to TBX - and that would be so devastating.

I'm now halfway through the series of 10 eps, which is when I usually have an opinion to share (very few series managed to change dramatically past that - with the two noticeable exceptions of Game of Thrones, which tanked the last two seasons, and Guardian, which did the same in the last five eps), so here it is:

Cursed...

...is a mixed bag for me. I'm intrigued by the story and plot threads, and I definitely want to know how they play out, but I don't care much about the presentation of the characters and some of the chosen locations are downright jarring to me (maybe I know too much about medieval and renaissance architecture to mistake them for anything that could have been around as ruins in Arthurian times), giving the whole shebang a distinct "cheap Indie theater feel".
I will watch this to the end, because I want to know how the threads are connected and the tale woven close, but if this were a book, I'd be skimming fast-forward all the rest instead of reading attentively.

Start-up summary that doesn't give too much away:

Zen Seizaki of the Tokyo District Prosecutor's office stumbles upon a conspiracy involving a pharmaceutical company, a mysterious woman, and a political conundrum centered around suicides and the new district to be established in Western Tokyo.

The art work is decent. The subtitles (I used the German ones) are ok. The plot... WOW! (so far). I just finished ep.03 (streamed on Amazon) and am eagerly awaiting ep.4 (supposed to come next week). One of the things that caught my attention is that its based in today's Tokyo, with settings I recognized from the Mori bits in Family Matters, i.e. Kasumigaseki etc.
While a lot of the plot is criminal investigations, including interviews, etc. so far - there is a dark mystery / horror note throughout the tale that makes me wonder where the series is heading.

I spent the last two weeks - when I was too scatterbrained to work on the Decagram, that is - with watching a very delightful donghua series called "The Founder of Diabolism", which is based on a BL novel and there also exists a live action drama series ("The Untamed") of the material. However, I very much prefer the animated donghua version - not only because of its gorgeous, almost calligraphic animation art that lends a lot to plot and referenced concepts of taoism and buddhism. In addition, there are strong elements of xianxia (fighting style, swords) and folklore (giant snakes, snake-turtle hybrids, spirits, ghosts, spells...) All somewhat familiar & absolute intriguing given my research on Yue's origin in the Decagram. ;)

In short: without giving a summary related to characters and plot (because (a) I don't want to spoil you and (b) I suck at summaries) - it's highly recommended, with my only qualm being that season 2 hang us up on an arm (thus ended on a rather fierce cliffhanger for me), and Tencent has yet to name the release date for season 3 (rumored to be in 2020; but may be later, given that there's also going to be a related animation movie coming).

If you are interested, here's my Youtube playlist for it: MoDaoZuShi-Playlist.
There are subtitles given in a couple of languages, and the English ones are fine (of course I can't vouch for accuracy of translation, but they didn't feel/read jarring when watching. Given that I usually dislike zombies, for me it was a plus that the term wasn't used descriptively, even though it technically would have fit in English.)
akk: (The Watcher)
Ok, the six eps were fun, although I have to admit that I ended up watching the dubbed version (despite not all of the language jokes translate properly), because I had a hard time following -esp. the demonic- accents and the German subtitles on English sounds were... confusing. Sadly, the English subtitles included way too much sound description as to be not equally distracting, hence...

...but I digress. Overall, the series stays very close to the book (as far as I recall it) and shines whenever it focuses on Aziley - and I wish they'd put as much effort into the secondary and tertiary cast. Exaggeration is an acceptable method of style, but without enough substance it quickly becomes annoying (see Heavenly executive (tm)).

Anyways, all this complaining aside - it were two days of fun watching this. If you can get a hold of this, have fun! :-)

Now, back to the Decagram.
akk: (The Watcher)
Yes, I watched Game of Thrones, despite my utter dislike of anything related to zombies. The earlier seasons I even watched repeatedly, because of the dense story-telling that made every scene, even seemingly innocuous ones, plot-relevant - as in, skip it (or doze through it) and sometime down the line the story will cease to make complete sense.

In that regard, GoT's earlier seasons were an utterly, densely connected plot, forcing me to even endure the creepy white walker scenes (and yes, I still hate zombie tales; I don't even watch iZombie, which is about as candy-colored fluffy a Barbie-tale as undead tales can be), but GoT required the information in these scenes for it to make sense. A summary wouldn't have been enough! So I went through them as well - often with a very fine comb!

However, since season 7 - and partially already season 6 - the scenes are no longer connected, resulting in something resembling something I call "a lazy fanfic", i.e. one in which the author only bothers with the juicy scenes they want to play with and don't bother with character development and world building that make the juicy bits make sense. In most series that wouldn't stand out as much as it did in the case of GoT, which in its earlier seasons showed that it can be done MUCH BETTER in respect to character developments.

slight spoilers from here on out - including fascist developments )
akk: (The Watcher)
Finished watching Guardian tonight. It's a show I absolutely enjoyed, up to the point when they began with the time travel, at which point the show took a nose dive into an empty pool, sadly.

The characters introduced after that point (esp. the inventors in the past) were just cringeworthy, same for the "solution" of the final confrontation, which isn't sustainable - not in a social perspective (apartheit remains and is strengthened) and not in a physicist's perspective (that lantern's energy is limited, it ran out before, starting all the unresolved issues to arise - so all that sacrifice for another delay? Kinda like Brexit...Nope).

All that makes me wonder if they fired the writers at that point and replaced them with generic trope trainees (or tested a writing program on it, who knows?).

Final verdict:

likability: very high until timetravel; afterwards close to zero

rewatchability: ditto

writing probability: negligible

overall thought at the end: "Wie kann man eine tolle Serie in den letzten 10 % so verkacken?!" (German on purpose, don't ask).

After my reappearance on Dreamwidth (I've been gone for so long that I even forgot I've got a - now sadly silent - Reading Page for following feeds and friends!) I was introduced to the Chinese urban fantasy drama Guardian by [personal profile] rheasilvia and [personal profile] solo, the latter even went to the length of getting me decent subs because calling the German ones provided by Youtube "abysmal" would be flattering!

Yesterday, I managed to watch the first two eps. Enough to give a first verdict / classification:

Eps seen: 2/40

Likability: extremely high

binge-worthiness: very high
but depending on the availability of good subs, so absolute time consumption may be manageable for the time being

writing probability: low
so far; my writing is usually triggered by plot lines not by characters (think the unexplored connection between Cmdr. Walsh und Gooseman in Galaxy Rangers or the disappearance of the yin-yang principle from X/1999 that sparked the Decagram), and 2/40 eps is too soon for plot lines to be seen clearly and to be judged regarding "is there something I want to explore / expand / explain?". Plus, live action shows seldom trigger my writing, even in cases I love. I'm more prone to write to manga, anime, cartoons, and in rare occasions, books (thinking of you, Emperor's Edge!)

Thanks again to the ppl who introduced me to this show! :-)

A couple of posts about the tv series Game of Thrones have sprung up across my friends lists in the last couple of days, probably caused by the dvd release of season 1 in Germany and the airing of season 2 (?).
I've followed the posts closely and - so far - I've come to the conclusion that Game of Thrones is one of those fandoms, which I will avoid because I love the books and the tv show, and find its grisly depictions entirely befitting the source. (I only mourn that the direwolves didn't get as much attention as I'd wished for them).

Edit: Not all comments I got here are without spoilers, though. :/
akk: (Seishiro - Yes!)
I just realized I named Seishiro's sons like the surviving Sakhalin huskies in the Japanese antarctic expedition of 1957, depicted in Nankyoku Tairiku, a series not even aired when I decided on the names.

However, considering his choice of "Pochi" as Subaru's nickname in phone chat, it's an oddly fitting coincidence, don't you think? :-D

Nothing new on the writing front. Real life[tm] in the form of my 3rd publication being behind schedule and a Japanese television series (11 episodes) about a 14-year-old getting with child (14 sai no haha) gobbled up what time there was.

Regarding 14 sai no haha...
The series has good characterization, superb acting, esp. in the main chara (afaik, the actress was 13 at the time of the production!) and her family, an interesting plot that - probably except for the last bonus ep - escapes most if not all of the cliches & closing sap, and its backdrop of junior high school life (esp. in the first three eps) made me wish I'd seen this before I had to work with teenager!Seishiro in detail. Anyway, the series gets a firm "thumbs up". I really enjoyed the evenings spent with watching it.
akk: AKK - Schriftzug aus Blitzen (Default)
current chapter word count: 4178 (of which 200 are new words)
less because redundant scene bits were removed and the new scene in a different POV is more concise & to the point
new pov character: Akechi (throughout instead of a back and forth between him and Subaru)
character "on the prowl": Ijyuin Shigetoshi
character not wanting to go there: Subaru
surprisingly useful plot devices: tattered manga, consumer electronics, Huawei Technologies' office on the 46th floor of the Petronas Towers (tower 2) in Kuala Lumpur (though the latter may be used more extensively in the future)
research of the day: upcoming consumer electronics manufacturers of 2000 in Asia & plagiarism accusations, Kuala Lumpur in general, Petronas Towers and Islamic symbolism in particular (will be of interest in the further use of the location in the upcoming plot)
quote of the day: "If you continue like this, you'll wear a visible path into Imonoyama's parquet."

unrelated sidenote: I'm firmly addicted to the currently airing Korean period comedy "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" (same level as with Queen Seon Duk and Drama addicts summary is so not doing it any justice!). I wish there were English translations of the novels on which it is based.
related sidenote to the unrelated sidenote above: because I found myself refreshing the subbers' site about every other minute for the updates of it, I finally got myself a twitter account (AKK666AKK). It will be useful to keep track of the other sites giving twitter updates as well. I don't expect to say or retweet much, though.
akk: (SeiSub - Seishiro's mine!)
current chapter word count: 4373 (of which ~600 are new words!)
scenes worked on today: The Consultation
completed? yes, discounting some polishing and a tiny gap to be closed.
character being decidedly less nice than last time: Ijyuin
character being decidedly not impressed by that: Subaru (he's been threatened by a pro before)
character finally being reminded of breaking if not Japanese law then at least implied trust: Akechi
fruitless research of the day: Japanese jurisdiction regarding genetic testing without consent (and info out there???)
quote of the day: "This is not a question of 'if', only of 'how'!"

related side-note: There are still scribbles for "Five Days Later: Subaru and Kamui", but that scene has a totally different feeling and I just didn't get my mind into it after writing the Consultation.

unrelated side-note: Joseon X-Files is *FUN*!
akk: AKK - Schriftzug aus Blitzen (Default)
current chapter word count: 4283
scene worked on: exorcism 2 (mostly)
issues resolved: how to do it, and Omi's uselessness
character now having a father from Nagasaki: Omi
character who's probably cursing light-sensitive eyes now: Seishiro
character who still can't save the dog: Subaru (but he's not pining about it)
research of the day: Roman catholic church in Japan and the Philippines, Saint Joseph (as saint), prayer therefore
quote of the day: "That wasn't hidden."

Unrelated side-note (1): tulip garden jigsaw puzzle of 5146 pieces finished! Maybe I post a photo tomorrow.

unrelated side-note (2): I truly enjoyed the Korean "feel-good" dorama "Personal Taste". I especially enjoyed that none of the characters was one-sided good or evil (except one of the secondary cast) and that they used a lot of the common "gay cliches" only to turn them upside-down with their characters, revealing the stereotypes for what they are. I really had fun watching this one. :-)
akk: (Seishiro - Bloodied. Indeed.)
current chapter word count: 3998
scene structure: Breakfast - Omi's arrival - At the cafe - House visit of Hell - Talk Shop - to Shibaura - exorcism 1 - discovery - exorcism 2 - in the shadow of Rainbow Bridge - Ueno Station - Tree visit [complete, incomplete]
more because Talk shop & exorcism 2 were completed
less because the first part (from Breakfast to Talk Shop) was decluttered and condensed; the second part got more pace with a strengthened (if still incomplete) exorcism 2
amount of chapter complete: 75% (of which 60% are in continuous, tinkered text)
character being slightly less obvious in his kinks: Subaru
character being a better host (of sorts): Seishiro
character getting his drama post mortem: Romiro
and it's all for... the cops.
quote of the day: "You're going to pay for this."

Unrelated side-note: I'm currently watching the Korean drama "Gumiho - the nine tailed fox". While the first two eps with characters and setting being introduced were kind of slow and the fated romance bit felt a bit heavy, since ep 3 that's nicely balanced with action, intrigues and ploys that wouldn't have made sense without the slow stuff before. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, Asian myths, and hardcore police thriller shot through with Romeo & Juliet, go for it! I'm currently at ep 12 and certainly want to know what happens next! Which means, I don't know for sure - and given that I can tell the events in most Western tv shows from the middle of ep 1, that's a big plus in my books! :-)
akk: (Seishiro - bleeding eye)
current chapter: Epilogue A - Family Business
scene structure: Breakfast - Omi's arrival - At the cafe - House visit of Hell - Talk Shop - to Shibaura - exorcism 1 - discovery - exorcism 2 - in the shadow of Rainbow Bridge - Ueno Station - Tree visit [complete, incomplete]
scene worked on today: exorcism 1
character flashing the harbor: Subaru
character losing his patience: Seishiro
character not feeling useful: Omi
useful plot items: magical flashes, kekkai (or lack thereof), limitations of illusions
quote of the day: "Standard shipping goods don't warrant this kind of reception!"

unrelated side-note: Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend) is one of the few examples where the dorama treatment of the material exceeds the manga it's based on in effect and entertainment! If you can get a hold of those 11 eps and the movie length special that completes the series: do it! It's worth the effort and the time to watch it. The first ep might not be the best one, but it continuously improves from there on. ♥
akk: AKK - Schriftzug aus Blitzen (Default)
I must admit I liked the original startrek. I also liked some of the settings of the later series (DS-9, Voyager), but I also never truly bothered to follow the series (chronologically or complete), because I got ultimately bored after a dozen eps or so, when nothing of the potential conflict in the setup between characters and surrounding was even remotely addressed or put to use.
The same goes actually for many of the sciencefiction series brought to tv or cinema in the last twenty years. Get me right: I *love* StarWars IV (and its potential), but that was *before* the rest of the saga; I love Eureka with its all nonsense take on scientists, and a few more (notably the original Battlestar Galactica and Bab-5, but again, "it's the setting, stupid." (to misquote Bill Clinton)).

However, when was the last time you saw a believe scientific and social different world set up on tv? The only thing I can spontaneously come up with is StarGate for a series, and even there it's mostly the original seasons with the earlier being the better, the Atlantis part lost most (if not all and then some) of its flavor, and Blade Runner as a movie.

SF author Charles Stross posted about the shortcomings of sciencefiction shows and movies in his online diary that brings these issues to a very clear point in terms of scientific and social world building for spellbinding scifi stories. His example is Startrek:TNG, and even if you don't agree with me (or like TNG to death), have a look at the quoted script excerpt for one of its eps, before the technical helpers filled in the gaps. It's a thought-provoking read.
akk: (Yoshi - happy)
Today I spontaneously bought a three dvd set of "Blood Ties" (first 12 eps), admittedly without knowing anything about the series but the few tiny pictures on the cover, the text next to it, and the vague memory of books of the same title in my favorite book store.
My monetary freeway isn't that well tarred as to me typically buying dvds without sound research about the content. This was an atypical buy. And a surprisingly delightful one. )
I definitely have to get the remaining eps. Now.
