Start-up summary that doesn't give too much away:

Zen Seizaki of the Tokyo District Prosecutor's office stumbles upon a conspiracy involving a pharmaceutical company, a mysterious woman, and a political conundrum centered around suicides and the new district to be established in Western Tokyo.

The art work is decent. The subtitles (I used the German ones) are ok. The plot... WOW! (so far). I just finished ep.03 (streamed on Amazon) and am eagerly awaiting ep.4 (supposed to come next week). One of the things that caught my attention is that its based in today's Tokyo, with settings I recognized from the Mori bits in Family Matters, i.e. Kasumigaseki etc.
While a lot of the plot is criminal investigations, including interviews, etc. so far - there is a dark mystery / horror note throughout the tale that makes me wonder where the series is heading.

...I would not want to have missed! (I exclude movies and books, otherwise this would be endless.)

[A.K.A. AKK is in list mode & doesn't know why].

Having finished the series yesterday evening, I feel compelled to add to my initial recommendation of Senkou no Night Raid, which was based on style and -superbly done- flair and setting.
While writing it, I've come across a few reviews for Senkou complaining about the plot and the insufficient conclusion. Now, that I've seen the whole series, I would like to differ. The plot is told in large steps, actions are shown and not explained, but can be understood in terms of characterization, which is given in the first six eps of the series (the slow start makes entirely sense now, even the cat!).
I don't want to spoil you, but this series definitely has fanfic potential (at least, if you care for the period and don't mind handling real world data), there's even a very compelling slash-pairing among the four main characters with just enough "possible hints" in the plot to go there. Extra-nice: their fate in the finale (to which they are crucial) is not shown. They may be alive, injured, dead... countless possibilities!
Definitely my cup of tea (Darjeeling SFTGFOP1 or otherwise).

I knew virtually nothing about Senkou no Night Raid when I started watching it today and what little I heard of it made me very wary at first. It's a short anime series (short as in 13 eps + 1 DVD feature of ep-length) and set in 1931/32 Shanghai and Manchuria, using historical events and locations I had to research repeatedly for Mori background details (and other) - among them the Manchurian incident and the various factions in China, Japan, and Asia in general - as a backdrop for a paranormal spy & detective story, including a female prophet contacting people, whose decisions will put events deciding the country's fate into gear one way or another. (Sounds familiar, yes? No, she's not white-haired, locked-up, and blind, but still...)

Overall, a firm thumbs-up for SnNR so far, which didn't seem to get much love from the international fandom so far. I don't know how the show did in Japan, but it's telling that there weren't any Chinese and Korean protests about this one. If you like historical context (and paranormal characters as in X), give Senkou no Night Raid a try. Just make sure you follow it long enough for the actual plot to begin! :-)

If you want to look into it some more: LJ's [livejournal.com profile] xxxholic_wing did a nice review with screenshots.

I meant to do this over a year ago & I probably shouldn't do this while I am partially depressed, partially angry, and partially pissed - for a whole lot of small reasons that are all minor for themselves, but amount to a truckload of everyday life [insert expletive for "feces" here]. However, after the last three days I'm pretty much convinced that if I don't make these lists now, I'll never make them anyway. So...

...when being worn out is spent watching all 15 episodes of Leiji Matsumoto's "Cosmowarrior Zero" (13 serial eps and 2 tv specials) in one go from 10:00 to somewhat 18:30, with brief interruptions to refill coffee and creme softcake. ♥

And to top it off, I don't even have to develop a bad conscience about it, because my data analysis laptop was running an extensive system check after an unexpected crash this morning and nicely recovered around 17:55! ♥ ♥

On an afterthought: I absolutely need Zero and Captain Harlock icons now!

Originally I planned to sort in the bookshelves and continue writing on my current fic project. That was at 10 a.m. today. Then I remembered the dvd box set that arrived yesterday and decided to have a look at the disks to see if they were ok (and whether or not I liked the animation style).
Result: the books are still piled up on the window sill, my fic is untouched and I spent the day watching Matsumoto's "Captain Herlock - the endless odyssey" in one go (13 eps; done at about 5:30 p.m.).
The animation style is "80s" and reminds me a lot of "Captain Future", the voice acting is movie quality, and the soundtrack... *mmmmh!* (and I'm usually one to be annoyed by film music).
As for the plot - there are a few typical space opera physics goof-ups (being a physicist I can't help but notice those) but since the story itself holds a few decidedly myth / fantasy elements, it doesn't disturb much - and for the story itself...
if you like space operas and "Pirates of the Caribbean" then
...go, watch it!

I had a great day! :D
