On Warnings & Fanfic Ratings
Jun. 30th, 2009 01:07 pmGiven the recent kerfuffle about warnings for fanfics, I hereby explicitly state my own policy:
Fanfic rating policy: I rate my fanfics using the MPAA rating system (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17). You'll find the rating stated in my fanfic guide post, in my announcement posts to communities, and at the very top of the story itself. The rating is followed by a listing of the reason for the rating.
Multi-chapter stories are rated as a whole in the same manner at the very beginning of the fic. If the content of a later chapter exceeds the scope of the initial rating, an additional warning is given at the top of the chapter.
I use AdultFanfiction.net's extensive list of story codes as a first reference for content to list. However, I expect potential readers to inform themselves about the canon content of the respective fandom. Please note that I am German and more critical about violence than sex. However, I try to pay respect to the different sensibilities esp. in the US by usually using the higher rating when I believe it might differ.
Additional statement: This policy has been in use since 1995 (minus the AFF reference, which wasn't available back then).
If you are unsure about a fic of mine, you may pm or mail me about the critical content and I do my best to answer you quickly whether or not a story is save.
If you want to harass me about rating too much, too little, for the wrong stuff, in the wrong language, context, place, order, color, style or general perception of life[tm]: Fuck off & think of the children elsewhere!

Well... let's look at the bright side... it means someone reads warnings... I met so many people who didn't that I've starte wondering why I bother writing them...
I was always an advocate for labeling a fic in a way that allows potential readers to make an educated decision whether or not they want to read it, but this debate raises my hackles.
This went completely out of proportions... and some of the reasoning were completely senseless... not mentioning rude and insensitive but it seems that's what the internet is for... -_-
As much as some people want to believe the contrary internet is a community.
Most of what you write is public and when it is it's not aymore as if you're writing on your little diary, it's like you're talking with the world. And there are common rules of politeness to talk with others, rules that regulate freedom of expression too.
... sometimes I'm glad I'm in a small fandom and not in a big one and therefore I face less risk to deal with all this...
People like drama. It makes them feel important.
That's commonly labeled as "people" or "humans". Good luck. :)
The only 'open to everyone' conversations I saw where the ones in which we were complaining about trains/planes/busses being late (or other similar disservices) but in those we were all agreeing about pubblic tansportation being a mess...
...and frankly, public transport is no controversial topic. I have yet to find one that doesn't suck one way or the other. ;)
Same here sadly. I guess it's part of the definition of public transportation...
With the one I currently have, I know how it sucks at least.
I don't want to learn the suckage of another one.
b) you were curious what this was all about?
c) compulsory clickitis? ;)
Except you count the bag of fruit gummy bears...
No, let's not go there. ;)
