I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future, so I expect online time to go up - as 1.5 hours commuting time are freed for other tasks.

Alphabetical watching meme taken from [personal profile] solo filled with... well, see for yourself. :)

Name a TV show you like, starting with each letter of the alphabet )
akk: AKK - Schriftzug aus Blitzen (Default)
words to ponder without much contemplation provided by [personal profile] solo:

winter
too damn short, favorite season, no allergies, running around full of energy without thinking about pollen...
with a little more thought: sadness because the climate crisis expands the antagonist (summer), and the permanent snow and ice spots are getting smaller and smaller. :(

cake
"piece of..." and self-made with trail mix instead of raisins.

giraffe
there's a weird piano called a giraffe. No really, it was featured in a tv show (or some such) a while ago and looked really weird. It stuck in my head because I thought that doesn't really look like a long-necked ruminant.

If you want to play, reply and I'll try to come up with three words for you, too. Feel free to provide me with additional word-triplets in the comments. :)

List fifteen of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

1. Tokyo Babylon (X/1999): Sakurazuka Seishiro
2. Galaxy Rangers: Shane Gooseman
3. Robin of Sherwood: Robin of Loxley
4. StarGate SG-1: Col. Jack O'Neill
5. FAKE: Randy "Ryo" McLean
6. Babylon-5: G'Kar
7. StarTrek DS-9: Gul Dukat (but it's a tie between him and Elim Garak)
8. Yami no Matsuei: Tatsumi Seiichiro
9. C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner: Ilisidi (very close 2nd: Bren Cameron)
10. C.J. Cherryh's Gate Quadrology: Morgaine
11. C.J. Cherryh's The Dreaming Tree: Arafel
12. Ai no Kusabi: Katze
13. Barry Eisler's Rain series: John Rain
14. C. L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series: Steeli
15. Markus Heitz' Die Mächte des Feuers: Silena (tie with Ddraig, actually)

This was fun, though the list of fandoms probably says more about my current (or most recent) reads than about my closest ties. :-)

Spotted this on [livejournal.com profile] shinga's blog recently (ditto for the blogs of [livejournal.com profile] rurounitriv and [livejournal.com profile] bruinhilda). Go to http://blackacrebrewing.com/home/ . (You might have to temporarily allow the site in NoScript). When the age verification comes up, tell it you're under 21. Make sure you have your sound on.
You know, I did always wonder what the world would be like when my generation was in charge...

...and you probably do not want to sip from your coffee just then (except you have a liquid-proof keyboard)!

It's [personal profile] solo's fault!

Go look at your blog/journal. Find the last Fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the Zombie Apocalypse. How fucked are you?

Depends.
If referring to a possible fandom within a longer, non-fandom-oriented post counts, then it would be Ryoma Sakamoto from Ryomaden, swift-minded, innovative, and very good with swords.
If referring to the first post dedicated to fandom, it would be Seishiro (and Subaru to keep him in check), so *shrug* and...
given that whoever it is, would be teamed up with me:

It's a scientific fact that a killer fungus turns Amazon rainforest ants into zombies (Warning: graphic pictures!). Therefore, zombiism = fungal infection.
Hence, I'd get a family pack of industrial grade fungicide, a spray cannon, a very good breathing filter for chemicals (recommended anyway in case of zombies, because of their *stink*!), ignore environmental protection laws on a widescale basis for at least 30 mins, then cover the de-zombified remains with a fungicidal strain of bacillus subtilis and return to my current projects. *vbeg*

The rules:
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to the page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences to LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

The result:
Cade stood calmly. The big man was an inert lump on the pavement outside. Her wail died away almost comically. There was only the sound of the broken glass falling out of its frame.
The receptionist huddled against the door.
"I'll call the police," she said, nearly shrieking.

Book: Christopher Farnsworth, "Blood Oath - the President's Vampire", ISBN 978-0-399-15667-0

...and I would like to add that the book is a lot better than the single excerpt above suggests. It's a rapid moving, imaginative combination of terror thriller and paranormal (vampire & co) action novel that proved to be a very delightful read after years and years of the vampire genre being repeated and soft-rinsed, creme-colored (and finally sparkly!) vampire books. This is tough, fast paced, breathless and decidedly unsparkly! I love it.

taken from [livejournal.com profile] jeldi. Sadly, some of the questions don't allow for multiple choice and/or different aspects in different fandoms, hence I answered the test separately for my two main fandoms. Interestingly with different results:

for TBX: The Mindgamer )

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] jeldi, who gave me the letter R. The last one was actually tough. I never noticed, how much of my interests start with S, T, and L. :)

Comment and I'll give you a letter, then you have to list ten people/places/things you love that begin with that letter, afterwards post it on your journal and fill out letters of your own.

  5. Atlan (homonymous paperback novel series, mostly written by Hanns Kneifel

  6. Morgaine ("The Morgaine Saga" by C. J. Cherryh)

  8. Chakotay (Voyager - actually equal off with Gul Dukat from DS9!)

  9. Randy "Ryo" McLane (FAKE)

  10. Judi Dench's "M" (Casino Royale)

In lieu of the increasingly available option to set "access controls" for fics not suitable for all audiences, I wonder how you rate multi-chapter fics.

I know that when people click on a fic rated NC-17 and find no content they consider "for mature audience", they tend to be annoyed (or even angry) about the false rating - often independent of whether or not they liked the fic in question - but what is considered mature depends a lot on the cultural background. For example: the US rates a lot more restrictive on sex and drugs than on (bloody) violence, whereas in Germany it's exactly the other way round. How do you rate your fics in that regard?

And what to do about multi-chapter fics? Not all chapters contain NC-17 material, some are just R or even PG, but such a chapter is merely a part of the whole story, which won't work without the mature parts. Do you rate chapters be rated strictly by what's in them - thus granting younger readers access to story parts, all the while knowing that they can't read the whole thing - or do you rate the story as a whole like I do?

How do you do it? :)

Which books that left a lasting impression on you did you read - or reread - over the last three months?

To clarify things: only books that you read voluntarily and completely count. That means, if you tackled Emily Brontë for school, it does not count (probably with the exception that you are a rabid fan of hers and are absolutely in love with her prose ever since). If you have to go to your book pile and look up title and summary to list the book, it does not count.

my count: 9 )

Ganked from [insanejournal.com profile] solo: the unread book meme
What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicise the ones you started but didn't finish.
cut for convenience )
akk: AKK - Schriftzug aus Blitzen (Default)
Taken from Elbales:

"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike through what you consider a complete waste of paper & time.
5) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

28/100 and five intentions )

Sadly German classics are underrepresented. The quota would be better then. :)
