We did it! Over 1 million people across every EU country have signed the petition for a freeze on all genetically modified crops. EU decision makers have committed to act upon any petition of this magnitude -- and this is the first to test their resolve!

Europe against genetically modified crops
If you live in Europe, this may be relevant to your concerns:
"The European Commission has just approved growing genetically modified crops for the first time in 12 years, putting the GM lobby's profits over public concerns -- 60% of Europeans feel we need more information before growing foods that could threaten our health and environment.
A new initiative allows 1 million EU citizens a unique chance to make official requests of the European Commission. Let's build a million voices for a ban on GM foods until the research is done."
There's a formal petition by the European Citizens' Initiative against it; if one million EU citizens sign, an official request can be made to the EU to ban GM foods pending further research. If you are an EU citizen, you can sign here.

The 'It Gets Better' Project for LGBT teenagers
If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans, you might think about participating in the It Gets Better Project, started by Dan Savage and meant to let LGBT high school students who are bullied know that things will improve after high school. He started the campaign after a gay teenager killed himself earlier this month; the idea is to give teenagers in the same sitation the hope and encouragement to stick it out. Anybody can upload a video to the It Gets Better YouTube channel. Think about it!

...I've been offended by the pope!

"As we reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the twentieth century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus to a “reductive vision of the person and his destiny"
Pope Benedict XVI in the UK

No, atheism does not make you an amoral, unethical misanthropist out to slaughter world populace any more than faith makes you a morally sound, ethical philanthropist out to save the world populace by default!

If you want to read up more on this speech of intolerance and its long debunked equation of "secularism and atheism = lack of virtue and morality = Nazism", Bad Astronomy's Phil has a good summary here.

Artist Darryl Cunningham made a 15 pages webcomic illuminating the MMR vaccine controversy that ultimately sparked countless measles outbreaks across the world. It is a strict and very readable summary of the whole, sordid affair.

I've found this essay by Faith Belle, The Problem with Colorblindness, to be a very levelheaded and inspiring read on the matter. It explains in clear prose colorblindness at its best and worst, and the meaning of both for society.

Steve Jobs says the iPad offers the world freedom from porn.

It is a taletelling sign, when an influential company (boss) like iApple talks about "freedom from" instead of "freedom to". I prefer having the "freedom to" decide pro or against something, rather than having the decision taken away by "freedom from".
Matter of fact: in Apple's case that will be me. If I'm ever tempted by an Apple product again, I most certainly put iSteve's quote on my desktop as a reminder not to go there!

I offered my opinion that most everything that Jesus taught can be distilled down to one simple, if not a bit vulgar, statement: "Life is hard, we're all in this together, don't be a dick."

...and then they are going to compare sizes and it starts all over again.

Once in a while you stumble across an essay of which you find you agree with it.
Seldom it is an essay about an important thing.
Even more rare are essays about ethical work.
And having it titled "I'm An Idiot..." is just priceless!
