Guardian [tv] - final verdict

Finished watching Guardian tonight. It's a show I absolutely enjoyed, up to the point when they began with the time travel, at which point the show took a nose dive into an empty pool, sadly.

The characters introduced after that point (esp. the inventors in the past) were just cringeworthy, same for the "solution" of the final confrontation, which isn't sustainable - not in a social perspective (apartheit remains and is strengthened) and not in a physicist's perspective (that lantern's energy is limited, it ran out before, starting all the unresolved issues to arise - so all that sacrifice for another delay? Kinda like Brexit...Nope).

All that makes me wonder if they fired the writers at that point and replaced them with generic trope trainees (or tested a writing program on it, who knows?).

Final verdict:

likability: very high until timetravel; afterwards close to zero

rewatchability: ditto

writing probability: negligible

overall thought at the end: "Wie kann man eine tolle Serie in den letzten 10 % so verkacken?!" (German on purpose, don't ask).

:-) There's that, yes, though tipsy!Subaru is my personal nightmare at the moment.

However, it really irks me, because up until that point I really loved it, but it took tremendous effort to get through the last eps. In a way, I guess I hoped there'd be a grain or two to work with, but sadly, there wasn't. I'll do a rewatch of the first eps, though - way too much fun to ignore, but I will definitely stop before the back in time part.

Interesting! Definitely not my reaction to the time travel (and I don't interpret the lantern's energy as limited/running out), but hey. Jeder Jeck is anders. ;-) At least you found the first two thirds of the series enjoyable!

The time travel itself wasn't the issue, it's just the marker of when the series went bust for me. I'm coming from a strong scifi & military!scifi background (Legend of the Galactic Heroes is only the recent fad in that direction; StarGate (the series, less so the movie) is probably a better known one, though A LOT milder canon), so those components - if they are present in a show - always draw my attention first hand. And that were the elements they tossed completely.
