I don't think you actually mention it directly, but I always just assumed that Shotoku was the one who did it. I kept waiting for Subaru to shout to his grandmother something along the lines of how the Sumeragi clan is not as pure as she would like to think. Did you keep this vague intentionally? (36° chapter 8)

Actually, I have it pretty precise that it wasn't Shotoku. The Emperor's Murderer is a fitting nickname for Subaru's own first ancestor / original inhabitant of his body (which was reborn with "a fresh soul" so to speak), and Subaru would be very cautious to yell that around, because in not so ancient times such an accusation would be enough to end the existence of a clan. These are modern times, but the Sumeragi are a very traditionalist lost.

:) Well, I didn't state it flat-out, but there are a couple of hints throughout 36°, including Subaru dreaming of his ancestor, the Sakura being pissed at being accused to have killed an emperor, Subaru's thoughts at the rainbow bridge, and finally the events / thoughts while Subaru was possessed with his ancestor. The Emperor's Murderer is not an Shotoku, but he might well have acted on Shotoku's request, adding spice to the detail of who laid with the Emperor's Murderer's sister to spawn what became the Sumeragi clan later on. ;)

Lol, I'm starting to think that Subaru only knows just a tad more than I do, and that Seishirou and his damn tree know more than any of us. Thanks for the tips though, I'll definitely go back and skim some of 36°. :D

Of course, the Tree is kind of an eye-witness, so who knows what that wood plant can chat about... ;)
