I'm searching for a way to improve my pronunciation and listening skills in English. Since most of my movie squees are Korean or Japanese these days, I thought about audio (or podio) books, but am a bit of a loss as to where to find some with an interesting story (to keep me listening) and good speakers.
I'm currently listening to the podiobook of "The Emperor's Edge" by Lindsay Buroker, but I'd like to vary speakers not to get myself a dialect or a singly tuned hearing, so to speak.

Do you know of other good audiobooks (freebies or not)?
I'd love to get your suggestions.

In any case: please receive the season greetings of your preference. :-)

How do you feel about Game of Thrones? I love the guy who does the audiobook.

Yeah on itunes.

While game of thrones isn't without flaws I particularly enjoyed the female characters. So well handeled and such rounded characters. Let me now what you think. Alternatively, there's also the HBO series on itunes. You can get them either in German or in English.

I have Lolita read by Jeremy Irons in mp3. It's absolutely DELICIOUS to listen to. I could send you the first chapter or two as a trial run if you'd like.

Fair enough. There used to be an LJ comm just for sharing audiobooks, maybe there's one here on DW that might help?

I strongly recommend "Altered Carbon" by Richard Morgan - it's science fiction + noir + an interesting murder/suicide case. If you like it, then the sequel "Woken Furies" is also a must read. Both can be found in torrents.

"The City and the City" by Mieville is not so quick paced but has a good language and a nice atmosphere. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_City_%26_the_City
"Transition" by Iain Banks is also quite good: several interweaving narrative threads and a very "unreliable" narrator.
