A fire bowl is something like a large brazier, a round metal or ceramics pot holding wood or coal fires. Given the traditional setting of the Sumeragi household, I imagined large copper bowls with wood fires (no grill or coverings involved, of course).
Fire bowls were a means of purification and warding of evil (though I can't help wonder about the soot in that setting).
