because now some likely to be deleted fragments for "Excuse me!" exist.
status of the chapter: frustrating
problem: is there a reception area/desk/office/whatever at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department? And if so, where is it? how does it look??? what are the protocols, the... aaaargh! (I hate to make up stuff like that! I know US cop films, I know German police films, I never watched something like that depicting Tokyo's police... *sigh*)
futile research of today: see above
successful research of today: Japanese ID structures, passports & co.

Far from me saying that it show the absolute truth but Death Note shows a reception desk for the Tokyo police... and I think I saw one as well in Cat's Eye, Detective Conan and maybe in Combination too (not too sure about this actually... I fear I'm probably mixing it up with another manga...).
While they might have not portrayed it exactly as it is... well I think something close to it must exist or I wouldn't see why to insert it in manga (okay, it might be due to plot reasons but still... it seems a bit odd...)
I've no idea if this might help you... but if the place they portray it's the same I guess either they're copying form each other or that place really exist...

Combination does show a special division, not the customers reception. (I love those books!) And Cat's Eye (another fav show), but again, it doesn't contain the location I'm looking for - and even if, I prefer real stuff, for colors, feeling, etc. Cat's Eye is a great show, but it aims at humor and takes it liberties with reality for that.
But thank you for your effort. Rest assured, I'll keep on searching. It's just been a very frustrating day. :)

Special? Isn't just second division? Or you mean in Books 3/6? However I checked and they didn't show the reception... Too bad because that was the real police building... (on a sidenote I would apprecciate if they would translate vol. 6... since it's out by quite a while...)
You might try checking on Death Note. Halfway they moved in the future but in the very early volumes/episodes they were kind of in present time... and in the actual police department (later they moved to a 'secret base'). I don't suggest you to search through Detective Conan because the serie is too long, moves through assorted police stations and if you don't know where to look you'll spend a lifetime on it... -_-
And I know I must have seen it somewhere else out of late but right now I can't remember where... *bags head against pc*

And yes, real stuff would be the best though I'm not sure if there are pictures of the inside... I only saw pictures of the outside around... (I've been searching them for my 'places mentioned by CLAMP' picture and data collection...)

I did the elegant solution.
Find a way to avoid place detail: different pov. Works.

it works. it can be turned into a great scene.
my problem yesterday was that what I had would also have been a great scene, if the required additional info had been available, so I was kind of mad at myself.

but then, writing the last fifth of a long fic is always a frustrating process. so much to say, so little space left to say it (and precious little leeway for deviations).

^___________^
That's good. What's bad instead is that I will probably be away on holiday when you'll post it... so I'll have to wait for he end of August to read it... ;_;

Oh, I understand the feeling pretty well...

You're lucky if you find only writing the last fifth a frustrating process. I start getting frustrate right from the beginning... I really have no idea why I write so many long fics sometimes...

What makes you think this chapter will be done by the end of August? ;)

Date: 2008-08-04 07:14 (UTC)From: [identity profile] jjblue1.insanejournal.com
Won't it? Some posts ago you said it had the 75% done...
Still many issues to fix or are you making some huge changes?

Real life job gobbling up time; editing takes time; tinkering takes time; last 5th of story requires to hit the right meaning precisely. takes time.time.time.time...

Serious. 75% are 2500 words. I don't know how long it will still take. Could be 2 weeks, could be 2 months. :)

Oh, I trust you on that. Sadly numbers can't always help to understand the work between them. The 25% missing sometimes might be the easiest part of the fic as well as the hardest... and according to how big the 100% is... it can be a very long or a very small part...
But I'm sure you'll do a good work! ^_^

My mother was a cop for many years, so I can give you some American front desk procedures. I'm sure they would be similar in other departments around the world, and it's better than making some random thing up.

Will report back later.

Dammit I wish we could edit comments...

Speaking of German police, you should watch the anime Monster. It takes place in Germany, and you might get a kick out of that (it's a very serious show though).

Thank you, but I'm from Germany, I can ask officials -or read the documents- I don't need information on US and German procedures, because I know them. (And given said anime, sorry, but not even close! :) ).
However, there are quite some differences how customers (not suspects) are treated in the two systems, and I do believe that the Japanese version differs yet again. I just don't feel comfortable to make assumptions based on very different cultures, that's all.
