In short: the first four weeks, my labwork resumed and there was no brainpower left beside that. The last two weeks - computer shenanigans.
More elaborate on the second: my camera, which I need for all the video meetings in home office, stopped working, insisting that it was "in use by another app". It insisted on that even when nothing but a pure & updated Windows was on the computer. Uninstalled the camera driver, reinstalled it, used the newest driver by the manufacturer, used the driver downloaded by Windows, even tried the driver that came with the computer in 2015. Nothing worked.
Upon the ooomphed reinstallation of Windows, I noticed that the camera worked until the latest update - at that time the -still optional KBKB4598291. After I uninstalled it, everything worked. I reconfigured my system, set up the programs, the backup to the external harddrive, the backup of that to the NAS, the...
And then the next mandatory cumulative update KB4601319 that isn't supposed to be skipped broke the camera again! At least, I noticed right away, uninstalled it, and the system kept working.
I reported the issue to Microsoft - via Forum (in German), Twitter (in English), and the built-in Feedback Hub (in English, but only flagged as "suggestion", because I cannot report a problem without reproducing the problem on my pc for the hub to watch, but my system works again and I SO DO NOT HAVE TIME TO BREAK IT AGAIN FOR THEIR ENTERTAINMENT. Gah.).
In short (again): spent two weeks hissing at my computer in general and windows in particular - instead of writing.
On the plus side: aside from two uninstalled updates, I now have a system that is squeaky clean without any old programs and fragments gathering harddrive dust since 2015. Runs much smoother now. And also took the time to switch to a sleeker backup solution Macrium Reflect Free & PureSync Free (my old one (Acronis) had become unusable bloatware). But still. GAH!
