Paid Services Review - Feedly & IFTTT

...because they recently changed their service / upped their prices, etc.

1. Feedly (www.feedly.com)

my current plan (Pro) is 6$ a month and maintains its features because I'm a long-time client despite some of these features having been used to a new plan (Pro+ for 8.5$), which also brings Newsletter & Tweet-curation, and some nifty AI-filter automation on topics.
I'm currently staying put, but I'm tempted, because it's a service I use frequently and daily and the additional features would be useful. Also, so far they always did a lot of testing, also community-testing on their features, and so far got it right. There are a couple features in Pro I didn't use so far, but I'll probably give them a test / shake up, to see if the upgrade would be worth it.

2. IFTTT (www.ifttt.com)

goes pro (for at least 1.99$ a month if one takes it before October) or way more expensive later (think 10 bucks a month). Free accounts get limited to prefabricated applets and three self-made ones.
No. Fucking. Way.
Yes, they are easy to use and know a ton of services, but most of the services can already be GAssted or automated via smartphone / Tasker, and it often takes ages for an applet to trigger. Definitely not worth the money, even if they allow multiple triggers now (again - GA & Tasker are way more granular than they could hope to be). Their service ought to be good before becoming expensive!

comments

Galaxy Ranger Edits - Mission Report 40 & Tech Squee

Editing CS5 continues sloooowly. I finally got past the memory lane scene (cutting another bunch of descriptive half-sentences helped) and now started on working through the breakfast morning. Problem with that one: I have no clue about recipes & how those things are called in En, hence... RESEARCH. Sheesh, CS5 begins to feel like the Dekagram in that regard. :p

Unrelated side note: I finally got a hold of a smartwatch that doesn't look like a leftover of a steampunked Dick Tracy gadget (and also doesn't pack a gazillion functions I don't even use on my phone, much less so on something tied to my wrist (like voice commands, for example)).
As it is, it transfers the notifications I receive on my phone (a LOT, since I use timer, remind me, and Tasks checklist apps to organize my day & tell me in time what has to be done in time) as vibration against my wrist.

Advantage: my commandeering phone no longer disturbs my coworkers.
Disadvantage: now I hear "ALMA's voice" only at home, da sigh.

There are a few other things built in - like a step counter (slightly less nervous than the one on the phone) and puls and sleep counters (don't need & don't plan to use them; what does it help to know how I sleep when I can't change the conditions? Nada.)

Additional plus: no built-in mike. If some spy wants to listen in, s/h(e)/it listens to the rustling in the office wardrobe (I typically hang up the phone along with the coat... *eg*)

Anyway, nice weekend. :)

comments
